You Cannot

You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence.
You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves.
~  Abraham Lincoln or Rev. William J. H. Boetcker.

Remember 9/11 PRAYER

Almighty God, the past year will be indelibly inscribed in our memories.
We looked with horror on the terrorist attacks of last September 11th.
But we looked with honor on acts of courage by ordinary people
who sacrificed themselves to prevent further death and destruction.
We shed our tears in a common bond of grief for those we loved and lost.
We journeyed through a dark valley, but your light has led us to a place of hope.
You have turned our grief into determination.
We are resolved to do what is good, and right, and just.
Help us to remember what it means to be Americans—
a people endowed with abundant blessings.
Help us to cherish the freedoms we enjoy and inspire us to stand
with courage, united as one Nation in the midst of any adversity.
Lord, hear this prayer for our Nation. Amen.

Cat and Dog Theology

Have you heard of cat and dog theology?  It's not really about animals...  It's really about how relationships with God can be related to how cats and dogs treat their owners.

A dog says, "You pet me, you feed me, you shelter me, you love me, you must be my master."
A cat says, "You pet me, you feed me, you shelter me, you love me, I must be your master."

Our relationship with God is related to this.  Christians will either be a dog, a cat, or have a little of both.  A cat Christian will see themselves as the main subject in life.  A dog Christian will see God as the main subject.  Let's look at some differences...

FOCUS:

CATS
They look at heaven and say, "I want to go there.  I don't want to go to hell."  They move away from hell, but their main focus is on hell.  They are really moving backwards facing hell.

DOGS
They look at heaven and say, "I want to go there.  God is there."  They are also moving away from hell, but their main focus is on heaven.  They are moving forward.

PRAYER:

CATS
They pray in this order:
1. Blessings
2. God's Glory

DOGS
They pray in this order:
1. God's Glory
2. Blessings

WORSHIP:

CATS
They worship God for what He has done for them, and then for who He is.

DOGS
They worship God for who He is, and then for what He has done for them.

In truth, God didn't send His Son to die on the cross only for us.  He did it for God's glory.  We should all live for God's glory!

Fight for Faith

"Success for a missionary is not taking the Gospel to new lands and establishing the Christian church there. That is what God does, and He does it in His way and in His timing. Success for a missionary, as for any Christian, is being obedient to God's will.
Jim Elliot always wanted to be a missionary. He grew up in a family which read the Bible daily and lived a Christian lifestyle. He went to college with his focus on those activities which would help him to be a missionary.
After he graduated, Elliot had the opportunity to go to Equador to work amongst the Quichuas peoples and he went there in 1952 with Peter Fleming. For more than three years they worked amongst the people establishing a missionary post and an airstrip. Of course they had the task of understanding the language of the Quichua people as well. Jim Elliot married to Elisabeth Howard in 1953.
In 1955 they began their attempts to get to know the mysterious Auca tribe. They decided to drop gifts to the Auca tribe from Nate Saint's aeroplane. Eventually they agreed that the time was right for them to go into Auca territory. They flew in and established a base. They made initial contact with some members of the tribe and contacted the missionary post by radio to tell them that things were going well. That was the last time that contact was made.
The five men were Jim Elliot, Ed McCully, Nate Saint, Roger Youderin and Peter Fleming. Their bodies were recovered and their equipment and personal property was brought back.
To many people it would seem that Jim Elliot's dream and the aspirations of the other men had ended in failure. But they had done what was expected of them and it was now time for God to continue with His plan. Amongst the personal possessions was a camera and amongst the pictures taken were some of the Auca Indians who had initially made contact with the missionaries. The people in the photographs were recognized by an exiled Auca woman who had helped the missionaries learn the language. They were relatives that she thought were dead!
She made contact with them and before long Elisabeth Elliot and Rachel Saint (Nate's sister) were living amongst the tribe. They established a church and many of the Aucas became Christians. Elisabeth returned home to America after several years but Rachel stayed with the Aucas for many years.
The story of Jim Elliot, Ed McCully, Nate Saint, Roger Youderin and Peter Fleming has become one of the great missionary tales throughout the world. Many, many people have been inspired by these men. They have also been inspired by the the wives, and sister, of these men. Marilou McCully set up a school for missionary children in Quito. Barbara Youderin went to work with another tribe. Elisabeth Elliot has produced many books, including an excellent on the Christian principles on raising children.
The deaths of these men, a personal tragedy for their families, has become a world-wide testimony of faith in Christ and dedication to the work of God, which is much, much bigger than the conversion of a jungle tribe to Christianity."

From Christian Heroes:

Love

1 Corinthians 13:4 - "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud."

God loves us very much.  He is always there watching over us.  He gives eternal life to those who believe in Him and love Him.  How much time do you spend reading the Bible or praying?  Do you love the Lord?

Indescribable

Hebrews 11:1 - "Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain for what we do not see."

Have you ever heard the term "leap of faith"?  Faith is when we believe in something without seeing.  For faith, seeing is not believing.  As Christians, we must believe with all our hearts that he is real.  Without faith, we have no idea of who God is.  Some people say we cannot see God, therefore we should not have faith.  However, this is untrue because He is seen in His creation.  All the things around us display the glory of God the Father, who sent His Son to die on the cross for our sins.  Who designed geese to fly in a V-shape?  "Who imagined the Sun and gives source to its light?  Yet conceals it to bring us the coolness of light.  Who has seen heavenly storehouses laden with snow?"  These are only a few lines from the song Indescribable by Chris Tomlin.  And he is right.  God is indescribable.  We can't ever imagine how powerful and amazing He is.  He made the entire galaxy.  We are only one grain of sand on the beach.  He made this entire galaxy, so big that we cannot imagine.  Yet, he can measure it all in the palm of His hand.  He is truly the God of all.

This is a snapshot of the Whirlpool Galaxy.  Not ours, but one of the others we can barely grasp the existence of.  This is truly indescribable.
